The Greater Newburgh Symphonic Chorale

We joined hands, instruments and voices.

The Newburgh Symphonic Chorale has sprung from the long range planning of Dr.Woomyung Choe, music director of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra proudly presents its own Symphonic Chorale under the direction of opera singer Claudia Cummings. The great traditional sound of men’s and women’s voices now waft our area’s concert halls along with the Greater Newburgh Symphonic Orchestra We joined hands, instruments and voices. The Newburgh Symphonic Chorale has sprung from the long range planning of Woomyung Choe, music director of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra proudly presents its own Symphonic Chorale under the direction of Ingrid Narken who succeeds Claudia Cummings, founding director. The great traditional sound of men’s and women’s voices now waft through our area’s concert halls along with the Greater Newburgh Symphonic Orchestra.  The chorale is made up of talented local singers who volunteer their time to share their enthusiasm for great choral music.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the chorale please contact the director at inarken@hvc.rr.com.

The Chorale also sings its own concerts separate from the symphony orchestra. Since its beginning in 2004, the chorale has sung Haydn’s, Lord Nelson Mass, Thompson’s Frostiana, Wagner’s Hymn Of Thanksgiving, selections from Bizet’s Carmen, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and a concert performance of the opera's I Pagliacci and Cavelleria Rusticana with the Opera Company of the Highlands.

Ingrid Narken is a native of the Hudson Valley area, having grown up in Poughkeepsie, New York. Ms. Narken received a B.S. degree in music theory and composition from SUNY New Paltz, where she studied with Gundaris Pone, and a M.S. degree in music education from Western Connecticut State University.  
Ms. Narken has taught vocal music for the Washingtonville Central School District in Orange County New York since 1990, where her choruses have consistently earned high ratings at NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals and “Music in the Parks” Festivals.  She has also been musical director for several school musical productions, including “Annie,” Grease,” and “The Wizard of Oz.”  She was most recently childrens chorus master for the Opera Company of the Highlands production of “Hansel and Gretel.” 
In addition to teaching, Ms. Narken has performed throughout the Hudson Valley with many area choral groups, including the Newburgh Symphonic Chorale and has most recently performed with the Opera Company of the Highlands production of “Cavalleria Rusticana,” “I Pagliacci” and “Madame Butterfly” as a member of the chorus.
Ms. Narken’s debut with Newburgh Symphonic Chorale as choral master and director is scheduled on November 22, 2009. Details of schedules and programs can be found in Chorale section of www.newburghsymphony.org.
