The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra WOOMYUNG CHOE, conductor Summer Pops at Downing Saturday July 26, 2008 at 4 p.m.
It doesn't get any better than people coming together to enjoy the magic of music on a summer afternoon in beautiful Downing Park. On Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 4:00 p.m., The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, directed by Woomyung Choe, and in collaboration with the City of Newburgh, celebrates that magic with its neighbors. SUMMER POPS AT DOWNING is a free annual concert of popular songs, Broadway and movie tunes, rousing marches, light classical pieces and favorite arias. Concerts in Downing Park are a tradition that began with its opening in 1897. Returning Guest Conductor Richard Haglund, fast becoming another Downing Park tradition, is an entertaining crowd-pleaser. Assistant Conductor of the Illinois Symphony and Music Director of the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony, Mr. Haglund is an accomplished conductor, educator and performer. The renowned "Kiddie Conductors," the super stars of SUMMER POPS AT DOWNING, are the children in the audience. Every child present is invited to take a turn at conducting the orchestra in a lively march following a brief lesson by Woomyung Choe. Student-musicians, extended the opportunity to perform with a live orchestra, will also be joining GNSO. Added to the mix are the wonderfully talented vocal and instrumental soloists, along with the performance of a new work. Anthony Daino, the incomparable tenor who helped make GNSO's 2007 performances of Beethoven's Ninth a huge success, will treat us to Nessun Dorma from "Turandot" and the poignant Neapolitan song Core N'Grato (Ungrateful Heart). Our own lovely violinist and vocalist Michele George, who charmed everyone last summer, will sing Moonlight in Vermont and Unsuspected Song. Ms. George and Mr. Daino will also sing The Prayer together, a duet made popular by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Steven Luck, principal trumpet with GNSO and musician with the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point, will lend his considerable talents soloing in Ballade for Trumpet and Orchestra by area composer Steve Margoshes. Although Margoshes is well-known for the original score of the musical "Fame," our audiences will best remember him for A New Hungarian Rhapsody premiered by GNSO with violinist and concertmaster Nicholas Szucs in September, 2007. SUMMER POPS AT DOWNING is a fun event for the whole family, where the youngsters can safely run around the park while the adults relax. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy lighthearted music in the idyllic park setting. Buy a raffle ticket to win one of the many baskets brimming with goodies. Food and beverages will be available from Cracolicci's Pizzeria & Restaurant. Call (845) 913-7157 or go to www.newburghsymphony.org for more information. RAIN: The concert will move to Aquinas Hall at Mount Saint Mary College in the event of rain. [POPS IN THE PARK, a repeat of this concert, is sponsored by Tuxedo Performing Arts Group and will take place rain or shine on Sunday, July 27 at 5:00 p.m. at the Tuxedo Park School. Call (845) 351-3473, e-mail info@tuxedoperformingarts.org or go to www.tuxedoperformingarts.org for tickets and information.]
