Dance has always been one of the primary functions of music. In ancient days, tribal dances were used for all kinds of important rituals and ceremonies; in the courts of Europe, formal dancing was a required protocol in aristocratic interaction; and in much of Latin-America, dance was the way that the genders socialized together.
This program, ‘Lord of the Dance’, is a celebration of many different kinds of dance music. From the irresistibly jazzy rhythms of Bernstein and Shostakovich, to Dvořák’s bohemian ebullience, to Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro, to Johann Strauss’ playful and rambunctious polkas, this concert has something for everyone and will leave the audience tapping their toes.
